Brooklyn-based alt-indie pop act Julesy are quickly making a name for themselves as one of the most compelling new voices emerging from New York’s indie-pop scene. With dreamy vocals and reflective lyrics, her sound draws comparisons to Soccer Mommy and Snail Mail, while her folk-influence lets her carve out something entirely her own.

Today, Julesy shares “Never Never,” the third single from her upcoming LP Flip the Bed, due out October 17 via Strong Place Music. Inspired by artists like Imogen Heap and Alex G, Julesy delivers music that feels intimate, polished and picturesque.

REVERIE wrote to Julesy to ask about her latest track and what she sees in the future for the project.

REVERIE: You described “Never Never” as a conversation between you and your brain. What does that internal dialogue look like in the context of this song, and was there a specific lyric that felt especially significant to you as you were writing it?

Julesy: It’s essentially me being my own worst critic. I reached a point where I realized that thinking all the worst things about myself wasn’t protecting me, it was bringing me down. Sounds simple but I feel like that’s a hard realization to come to. A line that really reflects that sentiment is, “Oh honest head/ fed me lines/ so I dined/ but I bit my tongue instead.”

REVERIE: What do you hope listeners take away from Flip the Bed? And looking ahead, what does the future look like for Julesy?

Julesy: I hope people connect to it, feel seen or less alone! And really I just hope people enjoy it, it’s a vulnerable album but it’s also a fun one. The future for Julesy is playing more shows in the city, collaborating a lot, touring and seeing places and people I never have, and listening to and creating music constantly!

“Never Never” is out September 25 via Strong Place Music. Julesy’s album Flip the Bed will follow on October 17.
