Calgary’s Brain Bent are back with “NO SIGNAL”, premiering today ahead of its official release this Tuesday via Moments Records. The single arrives as the first taste of the band’s upcoming 10-song LP, marking a shift into a harder, egg-punk-inspired direction.
All four members — Joanna Iles (vocals/synth), Nathan Iles (vocals/guitar), Travis Midwinter (vocals/bass), and Gus Rendell (vocals/drums) — contribute vocals, making the track a jagged, collective shout against silence and disconnection. On the surface, “NO SIGNAL” is a song about a man obsessing over someone who just isn’t interested. But in true Brain Bent fashion, it unravels into something bigger — a jagged anthem about technology, isolation, and the false sense of intimacy delivered by the glowing rectangle in our pockets. “The song is about how isolating the little connection device in your pocket can be — the audience can figure it out,” the band explains.
Recorded at 840 House, mixed by Chris Dadge at Childstone Studios, and mastered by Deyson Thiara, “NO SIGNAL” pairs driving riffs with lyrics about unanswered calls and the paranoia of dead air. The hook “nothing coming down the wire, it just tangles to a noose” cuts straight to the heart of modern digital estrangement.
The release comes just as Brain Bent gear up to hit the road with Dune Rats, playing four Alberta and BC dates this month:
Sept 16 – Calgary @ Modern Love
Sept 17 – Banff @ Melissa’s Missteak
Sept 18 – Fernie @ The Northern
Sept 19 – Edmonton @ The Buck
