Sunglaciers Uncover their ‘Regular Nature’

Calgary post-punk band, Sunglaciers have released their third studio album, and as the name suggests, music continues to be a regular and natural aspect of their lives.

As a long-time fan of the band, their fifteen-track album brings listeners into the adventurous world of Sunglaciers, making this my favorite release from the band thus far. The album revolves around themes found in the complexities of human emotion. Tracks like ‘Cursed’ or ‘Rotten Teeth’ lyrics you can scream to when you're mad, sob to when you’re sad, or listen to when you drive with a significant other.

The main thing I appreciate most about this release is that Sunglaciers push the boundaries with their production. Collaborating with producer Chad VanGaalen, Sunglaciers has proven that they can evolve and mature as a band. They are keen on exploring new sounds and genres while meshing them into their known psychedelic post-punk sound. What stands out the most is the use of synths in the album, courtesy of Nyssa Brown. The synths build throughout each song and fade out with intensity. It creates a swelling effect on the album and produces a completely different sound from past releases from Sunglaciers. The synths in the release are much more prominent than past projects, with Nyssa truly making it a natural focus point for the band alongside Evan Resnick’s lyricism, Mathieu Blanchard’s drumming, and Kyle Crough’s basslines. Welcome to the world of Sunglaciers, where music is their ‘Regular Nature.’

My favourites from the release: Fakes, Kafka, Frog Mask, and Not Ready.
