Premiere: Pompey Debuts Stirring New Single “I’m Scared”

Montreal singer-songwriter Pompey has released the lyric video for his stirring new single “I’m Scared,” the title track from his forthcoming LP due September 15. Euphoric and lush, the song unfurls as an earnest ballad exploring the ways fear shapes our lives—sometimes as paralysis, sometimes as clarity. Much like the snippets that first resonated with fans on TikTok, the lyric video keeps the presentation intimate and unadorned. The words scroll across the screen with quiet clarity, mirroring the plainspoken vulnerability of Pompey’s songwriting.
The song recently went viral on TikTok, racking up more than three million views in just five days, before an official release. That resonance is no accident: Pompey’s blend of heartfelt songwriting and open vulnerability has long been central to his music.
“The song is called ‘I’m Scared’ and it says it pretty explicitly in the song, but it started off as just a list of things I’m scared of. Then I started thinking about how every decision we make can be seen as fear-based, if you try hard enough. The lesson that I learned is that it’s really important to make sure you’re scared of the right things. Lots of people are spending lots of money trying to scare you into what they want you to be scared of.”
The track is a centerpiece of I’m Scared, Pompey’s fourth full-length album since 2020. Written in the aftermath of isolation, the record dives into themes of fear, comfort, togetherness, and anxiety — transforming personal uncertainty into collective catharsis. Co-produced with Thanya Iyer, and featuring contributions from Cedric Noel, Emilie Kahn, and Brigitte Naggar, the record weaves an expansive sonic palette with Pompey’s intimate lyricism.
For over a decade, Pompey has been a fixture in Montreal’s indie scene, but in recent years, his own music has broken into the spotlight, connecting with listeners worldwide through personal song snippets shared online. I’m Scared is the culmination of that journey — a record as hopeful as it is haunting.
