Miesha Louie and Sean Hamilton, the duo behind Miesha and the Spanks, are gearing up to look around and consider their current place in life on upcoming release.

Calgary based garage rock duo, Miesha and the Spanks, just released “Smiling,” their third single release of 2026. It comes ahead of their upcoming EP, Visions. Ahead of the release, Reverie chatted with Miesha Louie, the band’s vocalist, about their new and upcoming releases.

So far the band has released two singles, “Fight My Body” and “Cut My Bangs,” which are both set to be on the upcoming EP.

“Cut My Bangs,” the first single release of 2026 came early in the new year, releasing on January 16. “‘Cut My Bangs’ has a bit of a ‘starting a new year’ kind of vibe. Like, starting over and cutting your bangs to have a fresh new look or new feel, trimming off negativity and starting fresh,” Louie explained. She added that the song was a bit “fluffier” than “Fight My Body,” making it “a great way to start the year.”

“Fight My Body,” released on April 10, showcases a more serious side of the band. The song aims to promote body positivity and be representative for people with similar feelings or struggles. “As a woman and as a girl, you grow up with so many reasons to not be on the same team as your body for so much of your life. And I think everyone has some sort of issue with their body and everybody is fighting it in some way. I like when things can be connective. It doesn’t have to be my story you’re connecting to, but the idea. I always like to put forth stuff that people might feel connected to,” she explained.

It’s important to Louie that she writes lyrics people can see themselves in, but it still starts with authentic inner reflections. “I write really personally and everything is from a very specific spot in my life and is a story from my life. But I don’t want that to overwhelm what people can feel, so I write a little more vague so that someone else can hear themselves in the story as well … I love when people come and talk to me after a show and tell me a song meant something to them,” she said.

Their latest release, “Smiling,” is “about smiling through it. “Whether that be bottling and presenting that things are okay or projecting a smile so that things can get okay, either way, I’ve done my share of both,” she said.

For Louie, the song also explores her current stage in life and how it makes facing issues look different. “As a mom, I can’t go have a bender and break down about it like I used to before I had kids and more responsibility. It’s important that I act strong and smile through things. It’s a different stage of life,” she said. The song was written in 2024, and despite its age, Louie said the song still comes up and maintains relevancy. “I could have written it any day now and it would still mean the same stuff,” she added.

After recording was finished and the EP was put together, this idea of reflecting on her current stage in life came to be the overarching theme of the project. “The theme ended up being a vision of where I thought I would be right now and where I ended up,” she said. “I have met my vision in a lot of ways, I always thought my life would be in music, and it totally has been, which is insane, but it's very different. I didn’t think I’d do that and have a family, but I met someone I wanted to have a family with and did that too.”

As a whole, Louie is wanting listeners to consider where they are compared to where they thought they might be when hearing Visions. “There’s so many wins that we don’t take credit for because it's not what we thought we would have. But there’s so many wins along the way. Its so easy in our current day with social media where everyone looks so perfect that if your life doesn’t match that, it looks fucked up. But to forget about that for a second and look around, you’ve probably won way more times than you think you have.”

Visions releases September 18.
