Rediscover Time Masters on the Big Screen During GIRAF21

Still from Time Masters.

Time Masters (1982) is one of the most beautiful animated films of our time. Directed by René Laloux, who also directed the marvellous Fantastic Planet, Time Masters is one of those films that comes about once in a lifetime. An immersion into planets far beyond the reaches of space, a journey into colour and sound, with a wonderful storyline that revolves around exploration and what time actually means.

The film has an incredible attention to detail with its animation, making it hard to pull your eyes away from the screen (but then again, why would you even want to do so?). Throughout the film we see different planets and their ecosystems, the creatures that inhabit those strange worlds, and how they operate, from possessing psychic powers to the ability of manipulation of the spacetime continuum.

Time Masters is a stunningly unique film that feels like it’s straight out a time capsule, showcasing the beauty of animation from the 1980’s, something that I personally hold close to my heart. Time Masters is one of those films that is so beyond deserving of a 4K release, it’s beautiful, it’s hypnotic, and it’s so delightfully immersive. There are many films in the world worth seeing on the big screen, and this is one of them. To be closed off from the outside world and transported to the world of Time Masters is a gift. GIRAF’s 21st annual festival of independent animation is bringing the 4K restoration to Globe Cinema, and trust us when we say that you won’t be able to see this film on the big screen anywhere else in the city. This is one of those once in a lifetime moments, and if you haven’t seen Time Masters before this is the perfect opportunity to make sure your first time watch is one to be remembered.

Plus, before the film you’ll get to see a performance from Calgary’s own Easy Idiot, giving you a journey of sound & visuals into the intergalactic reaches of electronic space, the perfect preparation to get your mind ready for Time Masters.

Open your mind to all of the possibilities that animation has to offer and check out the other programming that GIRAF has put together for the festival this year — you’ll see unique, independent animation from all across the world, and to see it on the big screen is such a treat. See you there!

GIRAF's annual retro feature reaches back to 1982 with the presentation of The Time Masters in 4K on November 15 at 11 p.m.
